In 2009 I came over to the UK from my homeland, Italy. I was in my early 20s and excited to embark on a new journey, and live a new lifestyle. At the start, I remember going through different phases; being very sedentary, and eating lots of junk food - all things that were not so available when I was growing up in Italy.
It took me a few years to realise that this freedom to indulge was impacting my ability to live a healthy lifestyle. I was putting on weight, I started to get poorly very often with colds and flu, and to top it off, I noticed that my oral care was in constant need of attention: developing cavities, bleeding gums, sensitivity to hot/cold drinks.
So, with the same degree of freedom that led me here, I decided to go the other way. I started by changing my diet to organic, biodynamic foods from Farmers Markets; I started to exercise daily and stopped using high streets personal care products such as petroleum-based creams, chemical deodorants and conventional toothpaste. I soon realised that my general health (body and mouth) depends on a very simple principle: Mother Earth gives us all we need, and that doesn’t include chemicals.
If switching to natural food was not that difficult, since organic shops and farmers' markets were plenty, finding oral care products that would be as ‘made by mother nature’ was not possible, there simply weren’t any products in shops or health food stores.
I decided to prepare my oral care. Selecting only ingredients that are ‘made by mother nature’ (like Clay, Calcium, Essential Oils, and Coconut Oil), Blend them into a paste, or powder, and use it every day. I felt that not only my oral care was keeping clear from toxic chemicals, but it was also surprisingly more effective than what we are used to, high-street conventional toothpaste.
My first product was a toothpaste, with whitening sodium bicarbonate. Then a toothpaste powder, for when I wanted a more ‘polishing’ type of brushing. Later on, when I ditched regular mouthwash, I started making a blend of Coconut & Sesame Oil which in Ayurveda is known as Oil Pulling.
Today our range includes products like compostable Toothbrushes, and plastic-free Dental Floss to be able to use our products without adding piles of single-use plastic to landfills. It's clear that this lifestyle has become my motto: to live a life in all its fullness we need to obey Mother Nature. And that means zero chemicals.
