Rosemary has been used for centuries in folk medicine to treat various conditions such as migraines, insomnia emotional upset, depression, anxiety, gastrointestinal complains & respiratory problems. The essential oil from the Rosemary plant has also been used for increasing hair growth by 22% but we will go into that in a bit.
Rosemary is an evergreen busy shrub which grows on loam soil with good drainage in an open sunny position. Rosemary is also referred to as Salvia Rosmarinus and it's got a pleasantly fragrant piney smell when leaves are gently crushed in your hand.
Today I've chosen to write about Rosemary and how you could use it in treating anxiety disorders and insomnia. For a person that suffers from anxiety related disorders, throughout the years I've built up my own apothecary of medicinal herbs at home that could help me alleviate symptoms of anxiety and Insomnia.
One of the many herbs I often use to calm my mind and body is Rosemary. This plant has proven to help me out so many times after a stressful day at work or simply when the anxiety is taking over my mind and body! Luckily my neighbour have a massive Rosemary bush next to our house and lets me collect some on a daily basis to use at home.
In this article will present you with a few tips for using Rosemary or Rosemary oil to relieve anxiety.
According to Mind.org.uk "1-6 people report experiencing a common mental health problem such as Anxiety or Depression."
*Before taking any Medicinal Plant you must consult with your GP first. Some Medicinal Plants could counteract with your prescribed medication and could affect your body negatively.
Research shows that inhaling the pleasant aroma of Rosemary can lower levels of stress hormone called cortisol in your blood. More about the research could be found here.
High cortisol levels caused by anxiety, stress or any form of thoughts or events happening in your life could put your body into fight-or-flight mode. When stress becomes chronic, the Cortisol levels raised in the body can cause oxidative stress, high blood pressure, weight gain and heart disease. You can combat this by crushing the sprigs of a fresh Rosemary plant, approx. a tsp to begin with (you could always add more as you learn how to work with this plant), place them in a cup then pour boiling water over them and leave the brew to infuse for 5 minute by placing a cloth or a plate on top of the cup then it's ready to drink! If a fresh Rosemary plant is not available to you, you could always buy dried Rosemary from any grocery store or purchase Rosemary essential oil, which by the way, is amazing when used in a diffuser. Just add a few drops in water (depending how big your essential oil diffuser is) then sit back, relax and let this gentle aroma take over your mind and body. Another way of using the essential oil is by creating an aromatherapy spray. You could do that by combining 5 tablespoons of water, 1 tablespoon of alcohol e.g Vodka then gently add 9 drops of essential oil, mix them well together then it's ready to use! You could spray it on your clothes, pillow, or just in the room to relieve symptoms of anxiety & stress.
When suffering from severe anxiety, depression or stress you must also look into your environmental & social factors. A medicinal plant could work, if you put the work in first. In our modern days we are surrounded by so many stressful factors. Be it work, family life, relationships and the list can continue but we must try and be kinder to ourselves, do nice things for ourselves and take each step as it comes. Also look what you put into your body and choose healthy alternatives wherever possible! Our mental health is also greatly affected by what we put into our bodies, so it's important to have a balanced diet consisting in fruit & veg.
Other ways Rosemary can be used in your daily life
